Do you ever think about your dreams, your aspirations? Do you ever look at your life and think man I wish I did this or I wish I pursued that or even that you are living someone else’s dreams? Well I can tell you there was a point in my life when I was a kid that I thought I had to be something I knew I couldn’t be. My dad was great at singing and I thought his dreams had to be mine. Last month I went and saw Disney/Pixar’s Coco and I have to tell you, this movie hit home for me because it showed me that regardless of anyone’s opinions or thoughts of what your life should be, you have the control to make your own dreams come true.

Growing up in a split home my mother had one idea for me and my dad had another idea of what I would be when I grew up. My dad really wanted one of his children to sing and for some reason I felt like I had to make that a reality for him. I can remember my dad making my brothers and I pick a song and sing it in front of him or using the tiles on the floor in the kitchen to show us how to do salsa footwork. He would get so excited to share his love with us, but we all realized, at some point, that those dreams just weren’t ours. Growing up I really learned to just figure out my own dreams and aspirations and I think it was in my teens when my parents realized I was just going to follow the beat to my own drum.

As a parent myself, I want the best for my children and I even catch myself almost pushing my daughter to sing or dance because I see she actually has the talent from my dad. Coco has reminded me that I should allow her to dream and if that’s something she wants to do I will be behind her 100%, but I will not push her to sing because it is something I want to give to my dad. Same for my son, my husband was an amazing soccer player, but I will not allow anyone to think my son has to play soccer because his dad did. I want my children to have that fire like Miguel, to make their own dreams come true, but at the same time instilling in them about family and what is important in life. It is never too late to follow your dreams and it’s even more important to show others that your dreams are your own.

I implore you guys to go watch this movie even if you don’t have children, not only are the characters cute and funny…(The grandmother is my favorite), but it can teach you an amazing life lesson of never giving up on your dreams even when faced with obstacles. Academy Award nominee Disney/Pixar’s Coco is available now on Digital & Movies Anywhere, on Blu-ray Feb 27
